Maplecroft’s Climate Change Innovation Indexes identify most adaptive and innovative US oil companies

Maplecroft's analysis identifies which major US oil and gas firms are adapting most quickly and effectively to a range of challenges related to climate change.

Maplecroft’s Climate Change Innovation Indexes, released on Monday 23rd April, have identified Hess and ExxonMobil as leading the oil and gas sector in the innovation of clean-tech solutions and products, the mitigation of climate change related risks and the management of carbon emissions.

Maplecroft’s Climate Innovation Indexes (CIIs) are an exhaustive study of how the 360 largest US companies manage and adapt to climate change issues. They have been developed to enable investors to identify the companies that are best placed to adapt to the physical and marketplace impacts of climate change. (more…)

Analysis: Independent audit of Minas Conga unlikely to quell Peru protests

Many Peruvians associate mining projects with large scale environmental damage, creating major challenges for mining firms operating in the country

Last week, on 18 April 2012, Peru’s government released a keenly anticipated independent audit of the original environmental impact assessment (EIA) of the controversial Minas Conga project in Peru’s northern region of Cajamarca, a joint venture of US-based Newmont Mining Corporation and Peruvian partner Buenaventura.

This found that ‘substantive improvements’ were required from these mining organisations before work at the mine could continue, particularly with regard to water management.

Peru’s government hoped that this independent audit of the EIA and its subsequent recommendations would help to quell continuing opposition to the project from local communities. At present, however, it seems that these actions have done little to allay the concerns of local communities regarding the mine’s impact. (more…)
